Water Purification tablets are not important where most of us live. In our fairly comfortable environments, and we take things such as the purity of water almost for granted. But there are plenty of situations around the world, especially when traveling, where safe water cannot be guaranteed.

When safety of drinking water is an issue, Water Purification Tablets  or a Personal Lifestraw are the answer.
Water Purification Tablets Personal Lifesrtraw

Water purification tablets offer one of the most effective techniques that you can use to purify your water.

Without them you will be spending your time building fires, boiling your water and waiting for it to cool before drinking or transporting it.

In the outback you may not be able to wait that long.

First, it’s important to keep in mind that the water purification chemicals will only work on the micro organisms and chemicals in the water.

They are not going to remove the larger particles from your water. To remove those you will need to rely on manual filtration of the water.

What kinds of micro-organisms occur in non purified water?

Stream or creek water may appear to be clear and clean, but it can contain a host of dangerous micro-organisms. These include the following:-

Giardia lamblia: These are likely to cause gastro-intestinal infections or illnesses. It stems from animal or human feces.

E. coli: These are not as harmful but are likely to cause mild stomach upsets

Cholera: This is one of the most dangerous bacteria found in the streams and creeks. Likely to lead to diarrhoea and dehydration.

Salmonella typhi: This is the bacteria that causes the Typhus fever, which can be deadly if not treated in time.

So how do Water Purification Tablets Work?

Water purification tablets mainly consist of iodine or chlorine. These are the most effective agents that are used in the purification process. These ingredients will deactivate the viruses, protozoa or bacteria that are found in the stream, creek or river water so that it is safe for consumption. This is important as these micro-organisms are the main pathogens or pathways through which diseases enter the body to cause illnesses and even death.

Use
It is good to start with the filtration of the larger particles that you can see. Take these out of the water before adding the purification tablets. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for dose. Generally, these will involve the addition of two tablets to, at most, 500mls of water but this varies from one product to another.

After adding the water purification tablets, shake the mixture to ensure effective mixing of the water and the tablets. Once the tablets have completely dissolved in the water, wait for the nominated time before using the water. Wait time can be as long as 30 minutes, or shorter depending on the tablets used.

The main issue with using water purification tablets is that your water will leave a strong taste in your mouth. If you don’t like that, you can also purchase neutralizer tablets. These will give you a more neutral taste free of the chlorine or iodine tastes.

Lifestraw

Another great option is the personal Lifestraw, which removes 99% of harmful bacteria, and allows you to drink directly from a water source
Using a Lifestraw

Either way, you will be able to drink safe water, without the risk of debilitating diseases.

Worm Composting is a very different way to produce rich garden Compost from your kitchen scraps. Unlike Compost Bins and Compost Tumblers, compost from a worm farm does not rely on internal heat to turn your scraps into rich new soil.

In a worm farm, as the name suggests, it is the special (Red) Composting Worms that do the work.

Worm Composting

Worm composting does not involve regular garden worms. In fact, Compost worms will probably not survive if accidentally removed from your worm farm trays, and added to your garden beds with the castings. Composting worms live off the bacteria created by the degrading scraps.

Composting worms cannot tolerate heat or sunlight, so keep this in mind, and place your worm farm in a shady position. It also helps to place a moist hessian sack or layers of moist cardboard on top of the scraps in your top tray, to keep worms cool.

Your Compost worms will rapidly burrow down to escape any sunlight. This is very helpful when it comes to harvesting worm castings from your trays. As the worms burrow, you can safely remove the castings without discarding the worms themselves.

What makes a good Worm Farm.

Worm Composting

The first thing you will notice is that most worm farms are Black in color. This is due to the fact that Composting Worms actively move away from light, even light colors. We want the worms to progressively move from one full tray, up into a new one placed above it, so dark works best.

If at anytime you find your worms moving down into the worm tea reservoir at the bottom of your stack, simply remove the base and paint the inside of it white. I did, and it worked perfectly, worms migrated up into the feed trays from then on.

Secondly, the Lid should be solid, no holes to allow light in.  The individual trays should stack together neatly, and easily. The base of the trays will be a network of small holes to allow your worms to move up from below and into each tray as it is added.

The reservoir at the bottom should have a spigot in place to allow you to harvest the fluid if you choose, or to allow it to naturally drain if you are not using it. The legs of your system should leave the base of the Worm Tea reservoir high enough from the ground that you can harvest the fluid easily.Worm Composting Live Worms

Once your worm farm arrives, you will also need to purchase live compost worms.

There are numerous types of Composting worms available. Whichever you choose, you buy these by the thousands. You could start with as few as 500 worms but it slows the development down  The more worms you buy up front the faster your farm develops.

When ordering, also buy some Coco Fiber bedding. This is reduced to a saw dust like consistency for your worms to nestle into on arrival

Coc Fiber Worm Bedding

You can order all these items, the worm farm, live worms and Coco Fiber here so it arrives together from Amazon

Let’s start Worm Composting

To start your worm composting eco-system, all you will need is the Worm Farm base, with one tray on top and the lid  Place the Coco Fiber, (complete with worms), from the package they arrive in and place this into the Tray.

From there, simply add your kitchen scraps, torn up cardboard etc day by day into the Tray containing the worms. You don’t need to add moisture at any time. The worms will start breaking down the Fiber and the scraps.

Just keep adding scraps until the tray is full. By that I mean the broken down material in the first tray is high enough that you can add a second tray on top, and the bottom of the second tray will be resting on the material contained in the first.

Compost worms are amazing things, but one thing they cannot do is Jump. They need to be able to move from the lower tray to the upper tray as the food source in the bottom is exhausted. Once in place, new, fresh food is added to the top tray and worms will start to move up.

You can continue adding trays to the top in this way. After a few months of worm composting, you will start to harvest completed compost by lifting out the bottom tray. Completed Worm Castings are black in color and will contain little or no food remanents. As your worms multiply, subsequent trays will be converted more quickly.

Feeding your worms

When starting out you are only going to have a relatively small number of worms. Don’t overdo the feeding in the early stages. Just add a small amount each day, and gauge how much is being consumed as you go forward. It will not help to overwhelm the worms with more than they can handle.

The smaller the material you add to your trays, the faster the worms will be able to convert it. So, either chop it all up nice and small, or you can buy a  Green Cycler Kitchen Shredder.  This will do a great job of making your kitchen scraps “Worm Friendly”

Composting Guidelines

Some worm farms come with detailed user guides on successfully composting with worms. Others provide access to online digital guides. Be sure to follow yours closely.  Once you get started, the worm numbers in your system will grow continuously.   As the numbers increase the volume of material consumed and the speed will increase as well.

drinking-water-filter-singapore-1235578_960_720In most places you can no longer assume that tap water is clean and filtered for optimum health. For peace of mind it is smart to install the best water filter you can afford.

In an industrialized world, Tap water contains a lot of contaminants that could be detrimental. According to the UK’s “Daily Mail“, these include Chlorine, Bacteria, Pesticides, Fluoride, and Heavy metals.

All of these can impact your health both in the short and in the long term. It has even been reported that Tap water contains chemicals which impact the gender of your unborn child. The taste of you water will also impact on your daily coffee etc

One way to reduce the risks, is to be proactive, and make sure you are drinking cleanest water you can. In your home that means filtering your water just before you drink it. You will find that the best water filters can remove most of the potentially harmful chemicals.

To be considered a “Good water filter”, it must get rid of not only harmful chemicals such as lead and chloroform. Increasingly there are also traces of organic chemicals, and bacteria to deal with.

We look at each  category of filter on the market and recommend for the best water filter in each:-

Best Water filter-Carafes

Best Water Filter Soma Carafe
Carafe water filters (also known as Pitcher water filters) are generally smaller in size, and suit one or two person homes.

They able to remove harmful chemicals such as chloroform and lead while at the same maintaining an excellent flow rate and cartridge life.

These are small enough to keep in the refrigerator to provide cold, clean water as needed.

With Carafe’s, it is best to choose from the top brands as some carafe water filters may have shorter cartridge life.We recommend the Soma 6-Cup Water Filter Carafe

Best Water Filter-Faucet Mounted

Best Water Filter-Faucet MountedYou can use the faucet mounted water filters for easy filtration of both cooking and drinking water.

They are also fairly easy to install in the kitchen. With these filters, you can also switch from unfiltered to filtered water.

The main disadvantage with this style of filter, is that they can slow your flow rate and they may not necessarily fit on all kinds of faucets, but if you are in rented accommodation they can be fitted and removed easily..

If you are looking for this type of filter, we suggest the Culligan FM-25

It’s chrome finish suits all decor, requires no tools to fit, and comes with a two year. Cartridge life is 200 gallons which should last 2 months or more. Included adaptors fit most faucets

Best Reverse-Osmosis Water Filter

Best Water Filter-Apec 5 satge Reverse osmosis

The Reverse-Osmosis water filters make use of the normal water pressure of your incoming cold water line. They force water through a series of filters, including a semi-permeable membrane. Water is then stored in a pressurized tank awaiting use. It is often filtered again before reaching your faucet.

They will catch a vast array of contaminants in the water including harmful chemicals and solids that have dissolved in the water.

The main downside with the reverse osmosis water filters is that they are slower, use more space and will create a lot of waste water during the filtration process. The filters will need to be replaced from time to time, as recommendation by the manufacturer and they will need to be sanitized once in a while as well. We recommend the Apec Top Tier 5 stage

Best Counter top water filters

Watts Counter Top Water FilterThese can be used in filtering a large amount of water without necessarily changing the kitchen plumbing.

Unlike the carafes or the faucet-mounted filters, they do not clog easily. So you will not be concerned about regular maintenance.

Most designs look pretty similar, and whilst they stand on your counter, they really don’t take up a great deal of space.

The Watts 500315 Counter-Top model represents great value.

It also takes most 10 inch filter cartridges, so you have flexibility when it comes time for replacements

Best Under-Sink Water Filters

Best Water Filter 3 stage under counter

These have the ability to filter and deliver a constant supply of quality drinking water.

Positioned under your sink, they will not clutter your counter top, and you can chose from numerous systems, featuring 1, 2 or 3 stage filtration.

If you have the room under your sink, in our opinion the 3 stage Apec WFS 1000 is a great option,(it measures 18 inches by 12inches, by 10 inches).

Short of moving to a larger Reverse Osmosis system, this will give you the most complete filtration available. It scores 4.6 of a possible 5 stars from existing customers.

These are our best water filters in each of the main categories.

To find the best filter for your needs, consider your water usage, space availability and ease of installation. If renting, it would be wise to consult your agent before buying under counter or reverse osmosis units, as these will generally require plumbing alterations, and you may not be able to take them with you when you leave.

Garden Mulch Helps Waterways if enough people use it. Much of the dirt in our waterways is due to storm water picking up chemicals and debris. Many of these items result in damage to rivers, streams, catchments and oceans. We sense that this causes pollution and depletes marine life, and we see it clearly in times of flood, but it only takes a shower.
water-run-off

When it is raining heavily, rainwater flows over the lawns and gardens picking up debris, pesticides, fertilizers, oil and many other harmful substances. These are subsequently dumped into the streams, bays and rivers.

If the body of water water collecting this run off is small, the pollution effect can be quite serious. The local ecosystem will struggle to deal with the chemicals concentrated in a small area..

Using garden mulch helps waterways, but is only one choice we can make to help out water systems..

Garden Mulch Helps Waterways

When we are mulching within the borders of a garden, we are creating a sponge that absorbs the storm water. Similarly adding good compost which attracts garden worms, also leads to greater water absorption. This prevents it from running off into the waterways and leeching fertilizers and other harmful chemicals. The storm water is absorbed by the mulch and retained in the soil. We are keeping the chemicals within the beds, where they are broken down by bacteria and plants. In this way pollutants are kept well away from waterways.

Garden mulch helps waterways in a number of ways:-

  • Adding mulch or compost to the soil increases the “sponge effect” and the soil will be able to better retain surface water, thus helping to reduce the runoff that could otherwise pollute waterways.
  • The presence of compost or mulch on the gardens will also promote the development of healthy root systems which will cut down on the water runoff.
  • Using mulch and compost in your gardens reduces or eliminates the use of synthetic fertilizers. These are the leading polluters of the waterways. If the mulch is well prepared, you will be able to eliminate the use of fertilizer altogether. and cultivate healthy plants in a sustainable, organic manner.
  • Runoff from a garden that has been enriched with mulch, will only enrich the river or stream ecosystems, not pollute them. This is the biggest benefit for our waterways when mulch is used in gardens.
  • Mulch also contains beneficial micro-organisms that will break down harmful chemicals, pests and diseases that may otherwise be picked up in storm water.
  • Using mulch has a large impact on the water carrying capacity of the soil. Increasing the organic material in the soil by only 5%, will  quadruple it’s water holding capacity. This significantly cuts down on runoff to the waterways.

Mulching and other sustainable practices can only help waterways if a large number of people use them  Parland mulch helps waterways

Fortunately many local authorities are showing they way. Council staff now routinely mulch parkland areas.

In the face of population pressure, urbanization and development have you ever asked yourself Why Protect Wetlands ? Surely those swamps would be better used to house people after all.

Why Protect Waterways

Canadian-Geese

Unfortunately that has been a commonly held opinion for far too long. Now population pressure, and developer’s lobbyists are putting increasing pressure on precious wetlands.

This is partly because property developers challenge local authorities and also ask Why Protect Wetlands. But they have a different emphasis, and a lot of money behind them.

How do you convince a developer that the ecosystem of the wetland is more important than a multi-million dollar resort project?

Wetlands, those untidy looking marshes, play a crucial role in the environment. They generally form a part of a large interdependent system in the local ecology. This means that destruction of the wetland will have far reaching effects beyond the wetland itself.

It will start domino-effect that is going to have an impact on everybody.

Wetlands vary in nature from region to region. Broadly they include riverbanks, marshes, swamps and bogs among many others. They even include the old rice fields in some cases.

One of the most important qualities of the wetlands is that they contain very rich diversity. Whether in the Florida everglades or the Australian wetlands, numerous plants, as well as animal biodiversity on the planet depends on the preservation of these wetlands.

When wetlands are destroyed, the result could be an increase in human-wildlife conflict in the areas affected. No one wants to encounter large lizards, alligators or pythons in their backyards, but that could be the result if there is ongoing destruction of natural habitats. The result of these encounters can be potentially deadly.

But its not only the potentially fatal consequences of human wildlife encounters. Remember we also said that these features form part of an interdependent ecological system. For example, they will feed the downstream rivers and streams. These also play an important ecological function such as supplying us with water or ensuring there is good quality water flowing downstream.

Why Protect Wetlands

Protected Bayou Waterway

They also serve as reservoirs for flood waters which could otherwise cause damage in communities and neighborhoods totaling millions of dollars.

The wetlands also help in replenishing the ground water supplies and help in eliminating pollution. Even social anglers have a stake in wetlands, as   they serve as the habitats and breeding grounds for local fish populations.

In many cases, wetlands and adjoining waterways will also be a major driver of the local economy. Not only do they support recreation such as fishing and boating, but eco-tourism attracts people and pumps money and jobs into the community.

So, Why Protect Wetlands?

Those are some of the ecological, economic and social values that the wetlands provide to the local geography and economy. They should not just be seen as a marginal or unproductive piece of land that is begging for “development”.

Importance for water quality

Water is life and wetlands play a crucial role in ensuring we have a stable and quality water supply. In fact, the primary “selfish” reason we should protect the wetlands is that they help in ensuring good water quality. Healthy wetlands are rich in plant and animal life and these provide natural filtration systems ensuring water coming out of this ecosystem is of excellent quality and free of chemicals.

Why Protect Waterways

Fish Breeding Ground

Protection of Wetlands

Municipal authorities should , by now, be well past asking Why Protect Wetlands. They should be part of the solution with low impact, sensible policies.

In some places, local authorities do protect these valuable resources by offering developers incentives to give up the wetlands for conservation purposes.

Authorities can also pass laws that will restrict activities that are likely to lead to the destruction of the wetlands. Local resident advocacy by aware citizens can also be highly effective in ensuring the wetlands and habitats are well preserved for posterity.

keeping waterways cleanWhere water is concerned, most of us are only interested in quality of the water that we use. But we all have a role in keeping waterways clean.

We hope that somehow, the water that flows into our homes will take care of itself. But just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a community to care for water. Here are ten tips for keeping waterways clean.

The volumes of storm water going into our waterways is Huge. Sadly, it collects a lot of waste, chemicals, and litter as a result of human activity. This water flows directly into the ecosystem including our streams, lakes and rivers without any filtration?  You can we help to ensure this water is relatively clean to help in preserving the biodiversity that it supports.

10 Tips for keeping waterways clean

  • 1. Clear the plant rubbish: Even rubbish such as your grass and leaves can have an adverse effect on waterways. So,when they build up and begin decomposing, they will absorb the oxygen and decimate aquatic life. The answer is to sweep these up and compost them. By doing this ,you not only help keep our waterways clean, but magically develop quality garden soil as well.
  • 2. Bin the cigarettes butts: Millions of cigarette butts are dropped haphazardly by smokers every year. These are easily carried by storm water into the waterways. As a result, they not only pollute but they kill the aquatic life. All cigarette butts should be placed in the bin and disposed of properly.
  • 3. Clean up after your dog’s. It is essential to clean up after our dogs, at home and in public places. In most places now, failure to collect droppings in public areas can lead to fines. The reason is simple, if you ignore dog droppings, they are swept into the water catchments. . Rather than ignoring them, just pick these up and place them in the garbage bins.
  • 4.Wash your vehicles on the lawns: Care should be taken when washing your car. Avoid doing it on the driveways and pavements as the water easily flows to the waterways. Also, try to use environmentally friendly detergents when washing your car.
  • 5. Proper disposal of paint: Do not clean paint brushes or rollers where the run-off goes into your drains. Paint is chemically laden, and if it  flows into the waterways it will poison aquatic life. It is safer to wash them off on the grass or lawn.
  • 6. Minimize use of chemicals: Do you use chemicals such as pesticides and detergents a lot in your home or business? Try to minimize that or simply use chemicals which are biodegradable and have been certified safe for the environment.
  • 7. Responsible use of motorboats or yachts: When using motorboats or yachts in the waterways, it is important to be aware of your responsibility to keep the waterways clean.
  • 8. Don’t over water your lawn: If you are over watering your lawns or gardens will release the pesticides and fertilizers from the ground into the waterways which can have adverse effects. Use natural fertilizers, mulch well and do not over water.
  • 9. Avoid littering:- Litter, including packaging, cans, bottles etc can have adverse effect on the waterways and must be disposed of properly.
  • 10. Use grey water properly: Be mindful of the chemicals and paints that could potentially be in your grey water. Where possible the installation of a grey water recycling system will not only help waterways. It will boost your gardens, reduce overall water usage and

As more of us adopt these simple and sustainable steps daily, the health of our waterways is improved. As a result, we, and the biodiversity around us that we depend on, all benefit from a healthier environment.

Made in the USA by Envirocycle, the manufacturers simply claim that this is the most beautiful composter in the world, we also think it is the best compost tumbler bin available.
Best Compost Tumbler Bin

On the subject of “most beautiful”, whether used as a single unit, or as a series of two or more side by side, these compost tumblers have a compact but strong appearance, that actually enhances your Garden whilst so many others detract. So the makers claim might just stand up to scrutiny too.

10 Reasons why this is the Best Compost Tumbler Bin

Buying either the Mini Composter (17 US Gallons) or the full-size Composter (35 US Gallons), the features of these bins are identical, all that changes are the dimensions, and the storage area.

1 Food Safe Construction

2 Compact

3 Removable Tumbler

4 Compost Tea Management

5 Easy to add and Remove material

6 Effortless Rotation

7 Appearance

8 Can be located anywhere

9 Tried and tested

10 Great Warranty

Food Safe

Given that the reason for owning and operating a composting system is to produce clean, hopefully, organic Compost to enhance your garden beds, Veggie patch etc there is little point buying a system who’s very construction can contaminate the food you later grow from your Compost.

Like most Compost Bins and Tumblers, the Envirocycle Tumbler Bin is constructed from Plastic. In this case, the material used is BPA (Bisphenol A). According to the Mayo Clinic, this chemical is often found in plastics used to store foods, and it is known to seep into foods. This chemical has possible adverse effects on brain function, as well as behavior, it is suspected of being an issue with blood pressure, and to affect the prostate gland in children, infants and even fetuses.

Envirocycle Bins are made from only BPA free plastics.

Compact

Compact Compost Tumbler BIn

Even the larger of the two Compost Tumblers is under 28 inches tall, with a base of 21 inches by 25 inches. So it stands about Thigh high on a petite (5 ft 5 inch tall) woman. This small footprint is an important factor when locating your Bin.

Removable Tumbler

Removable Compost Tumbler

Unlike other bins on which the Tumbler is fixed to a metal frame, the actual Compost container on this unit can simply be removed from the base when full. Its circular design and sturdy construction allow you to roll it to where the Compost is to be used. This again increases your choice when it comes to locating the Tumbler, and also impacts on ease of accessing the compost itself.

Compost Tea Management

Collecting Compost Tea

This bin is designed so that the Compost tea created simply flows into a storage tank in the base. Once there it is easily accessed by a built-in spigot on the front.By simply positioning the 4 plugs in the base, you can decide to direct the Compost Tea into the storage tank, retain it in the mix for added moisture, or if you prefer just insert 2 plugs and allow it to disperse into the soil below. It is an elegant system

Easy to add or Remove material

Composting material is easily added via a large, lockable door on the bin itself, which you keep at the top after rotating the bin to mix the contents. When the Material inside is mature, you simply roll the bin from its base, wheel it to where you want to use the compost, rotate it so the trap door is near to the ground, Remove the door, and tip the Compost out. You never have to handle it.

Effortless Rotation

Once the Bin is 3 quarters full, it’s time to allow the Compost to mature. From this point, you simply rotate the bin 3 full turns every 3 days to rotate the mix. To facilitate this, the bin sits on a series of rollers set into the base, and rotation is a simple, two-handed process.

Appearance

As mentioned above, the bin simply looks great, it is compact, but the construction means that it is always neat, clean and looks strong and sturdy. The design of the Bin and base is more pleasing to the eye than bins mounted on aluminium frames.

Location

One reason we select this as our Best Compost Tumbler Bin is the small footprint (21 inches by 25 inches). Combined with the fact that the Tumbler does not need to sit directly on soil ( as many Compost bins do), and the easy Roll Off Tumbler mean you are free to position it anywhere that is convenient. Placement just outside the kitchen door, or on a balcony or deck are popular locations, as they increase your convenience when taking out kitchen scraps etc so it suits the smaller spaces many of us live in today. Alternatively, it will stand anywhere in a garden bed without taking up very much room at all.

Tried and Tested

Envirocycle have been making and improving upon their tumbler for close to 10 years. A quick check on user opinions on Amazon shows a satisfaction score of 4.7 out of a possible 5 stars which are very high and with over 250 written reviews available you can be confident that the product does what is says it will do.

Warranty

Even with the resounding customer satisfaction, it’s also good to know that the Company stands behind their product. To that end, a 5-year warranty, and a solid customer service support complete the picture, and our reasoning in selecting it as our Best Compost Tumbler Bin.

Whilst this is our Best Compost Tumbler, there is one negative in our opinion. Once the tumbler is full it will take 8 weeks to mature (which is fine), but being a single compartment you cannot add further material to it in that time. This is an issue with Tumblers because you either choose one larger compartment or two smaller ones in the same unit. The smaller compartments have their own drawbacks as well.

In our opinion, the smart solution is to buy one Envirocycle Compost Tumbler and start filling. Depending on the amount of material you have this can take a while. As it approaches the near full stage, buy a second Tumbler to place next to it. Together they look great, and you will have the convenience of rotating the two bins, so you are producing quality compost all the time.

If you would like to see more, this 2 minute video will show you the bin in action.

Storm water poses a serious challenge to many communities. Unchecked, it will run off from your roof or the driveway and onto the streets. From there it moves into the drainage system and finally into the waterways. Rain Gardens can help.
Cottage Rain gardens

In principal there is nothing wrong with how municipal storm water systems are intended to work. However, as the water flows over the various surfaces, it picks up a lot of litter and chemicals. These also end up in the lakes, rivers and streams where they can cause serious harm to biodiversity. Another big problem with Storm water, is that it is extremely powerful.
On a sloping property water gathers speed as it moves. This leads to erosion as top soil is washed away, again ending in drains and waterways.

In rural areas, where communities do not have access to seemingly limitless water from large reservoirs, disappearing storm water is a lost resource.

A cleverly built rain garden can help with all of these issues.

What are rain gardens?

The term “rain garden” simply refers to a depression or bed that is positioned to trap the storm water. This depression prevents run off, trapping the moving water, and allowing it to be gradually absorbed into the ground. The great advantage of rain gardens is that they can be designed to seamlessly blend into your landscape.

Depending on design. they can also beautify an area, while trapping, and purifying water, before it gradually seeps back into the landscape.

This also means healthier lawns, gardens and orchards, all with a lower dependence on community water supplies.

The Rain garden starts by creating an absorbent depression in a location where it will collect running water. Adding good compost attracts worms and increases water absorption.

In some cases, it will help to add berms on the lower side of the bowl to increase retention.

A wide variety of soils will work in a “rain Garden”, from sandy soils to clay soils.

Plant selection will depend, in part, on the soil type. Mostly, plants need to be able to adapt to being water logged, but still endure dry periods between rain events.

Rain Gardens also vary in size based on the practical uses you are designing them for. On Acreage properties, where catchment and run off areas are large, a larger rain water garden makes sense.

How do the rain gardens work?

While rain gardens help to prevent runoff and erosion, the biggest advantage may be their ability to purify. This is extremely important if the water that eventually leaves your rain garden, enters your creek or stream.

The rain garden helps remove pollutants from the storm water. It does this via a series of processes, making use of various soil properties, plants and microbes inside the rain gardens. The four main purification actions come from:-

  • Settling of the water
  • The chemical processes
  • The uptake by plants
  • Bio-degradation occurring in the root zones

Settling: The rain garden consists of a physical depression that slows down the water flow. As a result, the debris and the soil will settle in the depression instead of flowing into the waterways. The vegetation in the depression also filters off some of the debris in the storm water.

Chemical processes in the soil: The soil in the rain garden basin also reacts with storm water in various ways leading to greater filtration.

Plant uptake: The roots of the plants in the depression will absorb nutrients and subsequently use these in their growth. You can make careful planting choices for your rain gardens, using plants that have a high nutrient intake, leading to a more efficient filtration process.

Bio-degradation in the root zones: The microbes present in the basin can also help in breaking down the harmful chemicals, and removing carcinogens, resulting in cleaner and healthier water flowing into your garden or the waterways.

Rocks can also be used as a filtration base for your rain garden, directing water flow, and allowing water to be reabsorbed to benefit surrounding plant life.

Eco Friendly fertilizer used to grow StrawberriesThe idea of “going green” is now mainstream. It’s no longer a movement of idealistic individuals, with an exaggerated concern about effects of a modern lifestyle.Eco friendly fertilizer is playing a big part in the transition.

Since organizations like Monsanto are being exposed, many people are realizing that going green is the only healthy option available.

Organic or “green” product options are popping up everywhere including the products that we use in our gardens, and our homes.

Because of the harmful effects of synthetic fertilizers, Eco friendly fertilizer, usually organic, is growing in popularity with backyard gardeners and commercial producers.

Farmers, gardeners, and hobbyists now have numerous choices when it comes to Eco-friendly fertilizers. These can generally be classified into three main groups:-

  • Naturally occurring Eco-friendly fertilizers
  • DIY organic or Eco-friendly fertilizers
  • Manufactured organic fertilizers

Naturally Occurring Organic or Eco Friendly Fertilizer

There are numerous kinds of natural, Eco friendly fertilizer that you can harvest and use at almost zero cost.

Examples of these include peat, animal wastes, and seaweed, along with various naturally occurring, biodegradable waste and manure. Other naturally occurring Eco friendly fertilizer includes rock phosphates, limestone, and potash. All of these can be purchased cheaply from retailers and distributors.

DIY Organic or Eco Friendly Fertilizer

You make these from readily available organic materials, such as manure and decomposing plant material. If you are already taking a sustainable approach to gardening, a little chicken manure (or purchased manure) can be added to plant waste to generate rich compost. making it yourself costs little or nothing. By adding the compost to your soil, you are replenishing nutrients and increasing the harvest from your vegetable, fruit of flowering “crops”.

Slurry waste: Another form of naturally based Eco friendly fertilizer that you make at home. All you do is take solids, (mainly domestic waste), and immerse them in water. The mixture is added to the soil to boost productivity or yield. Slurry waste can be prepared at home, by adding solid domestic waste to a water tank continually. As a result, you end up with a nutrient rich fluid, which you can draw off and add to your soil. As a liquid, it is quickly absorbed by the soil and taken up as nourishment by your plants.

Worm castings: This is what you get when you break down organic materials in a worm farm. It is nutrient-rich, and can be used to produce a liquid form called “Worm Tea”. You can make it in a similar way to the Slurry. Again you will have a liquid that you feed to plants. You are also encouraging an increase in worm populations. Worms are essential for healthy soil.

Manufactured Eco friendly fertilizer.

You can easily find companies that specialize in organic and Eco friendly fertilizers. These are made on a large scale from natural waste. Examples of these include compost or brown manure.

So now you know that Eco friendly fertilizer, homemade or purchased is readily available. You will find that commercial products cost more than their synthetic counterparts. However, they will not destroy our waterways, damage the Hydro-Biology in our aquatic systems, or threaten our health.

In short the extra cash paid, or time spent generating an Eco friendly fertilizer is a self-fulfilling investment.

Finally, the easiest way we know, to combine Composting with making Eco friendly fertilizer is with an Envirocycle Composting Tumbler Bin

Eco friendly fertilizer and compost system

This stunning composting system allows you to tap liquid fertilizer right from the compost.

It comes in 17 gallon or 35 gallon sizes,

Most of all this is made in America, from safe materials, and comes with a 5 year warranty. That’s why it came up #1 in our search for the Best Compost Tumbler.
