It will come as no surprise that, properly used, a Stainless Steel Kitchen Compost bin outperforms all others.
Stainless steel is a stronger and more durable solution than other metals. It’s not fragile like crockery, and will not become brittle and crack as plastic will. But:
Until now they have all looked the same, just silver, and basically boring.
Our Number 1 Kitchen Compost Pail finally changes that.
After a lot of trial and error, Green Hills Health have found a way to add a durable image to the pail. This is not just a temporary sticker, and it adds a little personality. The only issue I see is that the image itself is not symmetrical. This means it might look a little “off Center” on the Pail. Just an optical illusion.
Other notable improvements
This pail is made from a superior, food grade stainless steel. The first thing you will notice is that, unlike most other Compost Pails, this has No Holes in the lid. The reason is simple, they are not needed and they only increase the risk of Odor escaping or insects entering.
Most other Kitchen Compost Bins, seem to be creating the illusion that after scraps are placed into their bins, they actually start to compost. This is simply not the case. Composting takes place after your scraps reach your outdoor bin, where they are impacted by temperature, micro-organisms, moisture, worms etc.
If scraps are left inside a Kitchen Compost Bin for more than a few days, all they can do is Rot, and smell.
Knowing this, GHH has removed the holes, improved the seals around the lid, and still provided two charcoal filters to absorb any food smells coming from your scraps while in the bin.
Charcoal Filters
In truth these are probably not even needed with this bin, but they almost guarantee that there will be no Odors from the Bin. Reading comments from users, many have opted to just use one Filter at a time.
Handle
The handle is sturdy well finished, and designed to ensure your Compost pail hangs straight when loaded, reducing the risk of accidents when moving scraps to the Compost.
Using The Compost Bin
Getting the best from your Compost Bin, and making sure it lasts for years is pretty simple:
- Don’t fill it so high that scraps contact the Internal Filters. This means less frequent cleaning of filters and prolongs their lives
- Empty the bin every few of days. Most scraps contain acids etc, which can impact on the surface of the metal overtime. Frequent emptying and cleaning of the Pail will greatly reduce the chance of corrosion.
- After Emptying, hand wash the pail as you would any kitchen pan, with hot water and detergent, and towel dry. Regardless of claims to the contrary, dishwashers will shorten the life of stainless steel. If brown water marks etc appear, just rub lightly with a steel wool scourer.
- Do not immerse the lid into water with the filters inside. Mostly the lid only needs to wiped over from time to time. Immersion of filters without proper drying will lead to mold. Frequent washing of filters is also unnecessary and greatly reduces their usefulness.
